South End Movers
The South End neighborhood of Boston, despite it’s name is not directly south of the city. It is situated south of the Back Bay which is one of Boston’s more fashionable shopping districts. Built on a former tidal marsh, South End was developed before many of the other neighborhoods, including Back Bay and was filled before the Civil War.
Mid-19th century Bowfronts are predominant architecture in South End. This type of row house is usually constructed of red brick, adorned with cast iron railings and are five stories high, each with a rounded front, hence the name “bowfront”.
South End was once known as a “jazz mecca” up until the 1950′s. There were thirteen or more prominent jazz clubs in the neighborhood in the 50′s, however, today only one (Wally’s Paradise), remains open. The top black musician’s union also had it’s home in the South End from 1915 until 1970. A campus of Boston college opened it’s doors in the South End in 1863 and the neighborhood is also home to the Boston Ballet and Boston Medical Center.
South End is known for it’s diverse culture with people of nearly every color and race making it their home. The city maintains financial and racial diversity with the abundance of low-cost and subsidized housing in the area, which is also know for it’s low rate of crime compared to other neighborhoods of it’s size.
